Michael Mifsud close to Melbourne Hearts move
Malta’s record goal scorer Michael Mifsud edges closer to Australian A-League side Melbourne Hearts.
Michael Mifsud is in negotiations to sign for Australian A-League side Melbourne Heart, the Australian edition of goal.com reported.
The report claims that Melbourne Heart have agreed terms with Mifsud, but are yet to finalise a deal to sign the striker.
Club chief executive Scott Munn told SBS Heart have "agreed terms" with Mifsud, however he added that until the deal is finalised and a contract is signed the club was not prepared to make any public statements.
"We hope to get this deal over the line because his presence would boost our home gates for sure because there are many Maltese living in Melbourne," Munn said.
"He is a hero among the Maltese," he added.
The 32-year-old Mifsud has been a free agent since leaving Valletta FC in June 2013. He is the captain of the Maltese national team and is the all-time top scorer with 37 goals in 96 appearances.
If the deal with Melbourne Hearts goes through, it would be his fifth foreign club, after playing for Coventry City and Barnsley in England, Kaiserslautern in the German Bundesliga and Lillestrøm in the Norwegian Premier League.
In recent years, the Australian A-League has attracted a number of world-class players who moved Down Under in the latter years of their careers.
Notable marquee players in the A-League include former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke and Italian World Cup winner Alessandro Del Piero, who signed for Sydney FC, on a two-year four million dollar deal, beginning in the 2012-13 season.
