Michael Mifsud signs one-year deal with Melbourne Heart
Maltese striker signs one-year deal with Australian A-League side Melbourne Heart.
Australian side Melbourne Heart have officially unveiled their new signing, Maltese striker Michael Mifsud.
The A-League side confirmed the signing of Malta international Michael Mifsud on a one-year deal, thought to be worth around €200,000, ahead of the 2013-14 season.
The striker, known as the 'Mosquito' is expected to make his debut in October, however he is set to miss the season-opener against rivals Melbourne Victory as Malta will be playing against the Czech Republic and Denmark in the final two matches of the World Cup qualifying round.
Mifsud's new teammates will include former Liverpool and Leeds Utd winger Harry Kewell and the Heart are coached by John Aloisi, who was the first Australian ever to play and score in La Liga, the Premier League and Serie A.
The 32-year-old Mifsud had been a free agent since leaving Valletta FC in June 2013. He is the captain of the Maltese national team and is the all-time top scorer with 37 goals in 99 appearances.
Melbourne Hearts is his fifth foreign club, after playing for Coventry City and Barnsley in England, Kaiserslautern in the German Bundesliga and Lillestrøm in the Norwegian Premier League.
In recent years, the Australian A-League has attracted a number of world-class players who moved Down Under in the latter years of their careers.
Notable marquee players in the A-League include former Ebgland striker Emile Heskey, former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke and Italian World Cup winner Alessandro Del Piero, who signed for Sydney FC, on a two-year four million dollar deal, at beginning in the 2012-13 season.
