Matthew Asciak and Elaine Genovese confirmed as Malta tennis champions
Matthew Asciak and Elaine Genovese retained their title as Malta champions following convincing wins in the respective finals of the Gatorade Malta Open Tennis Championships held at the Marsa Sports Club last Saturday, 12th October 2013.
On the same day, Matthew Asciak and Bradley Callus were also declared Malta Men's Doubles Champions.
Matthew Asciak retained the Men Singles title for the 8th year running following a 6-1, 6-0 win over young and upcoming Raphael Sammut. The match offered some great tennis, with Asciak concluding most of the critical points during each game, despite very consistent play from Sammut. This win follows Asciak's participation and very positive results in the Davis Cup, as well as winning the Mixed Doubles' silver medal in the Games of the Small States of Europe, together with Elaine Genovese.
Elaine Genovese was once again crowned champion in the Ladies Singles when she beat young and talented Katrina Sammut in Saturday's final 6-1, 6-0. Genovese proved to be too strong and experienced for Sammut, the Under-14 Malta champion, but the level of play augurs well for this highly promising player. This title was the culmination of a highly successful year for Genovese, with several successful participations in European tournaments, as well as excellent results earlier this year in The Federation Cup in Moldova.
The Men Doubles Finals was won by Matthew Asciak and Bradley Callus 6-2, 6-4 in a very exciting match against Mark Gatt and Raphael Sammut. The large crowd at the Marsa Sports Club witnessed some great tennis during this final, with the favourites Asciak and Callus having to endure very consistent and aggressive play from Gatt and Sammut before being able to wrap up a second set which could have gone both ways.
Dr David Farrugia Sacco, President of the Malta Tennis Federation, presented the prizes to the Malta Champions in the 3 Categories.
"The Gatorade Malta Open Tennis Championships are the showcase of the best tennis players in Malta, and this year's tournament showed the great potential and ability which some of the players have," commented Godwin Borg, Tournament Director and Chairperson of the Tennis Section of the Marsa Sports Club.
