Schalke defeat Inter to set up Man Utd showdown

Inter’s European adventure came to an end yesterday evening after they were defeated by Schalke 2-1 at the Veltins Arena in Germany.

Schalke advanced in to the semi-finals with a impressive 7-3 aggregate over the holders Inter. Inter coach Leonardo admitted that it was a impossible task and the fate of Inter was decided last week after their 5-2 defeat at home.

Inter pressed for early goals but the Schalke defence and goalkeeper made sure the ball stayed out of the net.

Schalke went ahead on the 45th  minute. Joel Manuel Jurado passed to a unmarked Raul who dribbled past Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar to score his 71st  champions League goal.

Go into the second half, Inter now had the impossible task of overturning a 6-2 aggregate.

Four minutes into the second half Inter managed to score the equaliser. Off a corner from Wesley Sneijder, Lucio headed the ball towards the net but Thiago Motta managed to tap the ball past the Schalke goalkeeper.

Inter pressed for more goals but on the 84th  minute their dream of a comeback was ended when Benedikt Howedes scored to make it 2-1. Raul served Howedes inside the area, the latter then beat Inter’s goalkeeper with his precise shot.

With this victory Schalke 04 now set up a semi-final dual against Manchester United.
