Arsenal shocked by Tottenham as Chelsea defeat Birmingham City

Arsenal failed to take advantage of Manchester United goalless draw against Newcastle United on Tuesday evening.

The Gunners played to a 3-3 draw against Tottenham Hotspurs. Arsenal had a comfortable two goal lead throughout the match but Tottenham managed to destroy any chance for Arsenal to win the Premiership title this season with a great comeback.

The draw between these two sides gave Chelsea the chance to move up to second place with their victory.

Five minutes into the match Arsenal went ahead thanks to a goal by Theo Walcott. Fabregas served Walcott who then slotted the ball past Hotspurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

Two minutes later Rafael Van der Vaart equalised to put Tottenham back into the match.

On the 12th  minute, Arsenal regained the lead after Samir Nasri’s powerful shot left no chance for the Tottenham goalkeeper.

Robin Van Persie gave Arsenal a two goal advantage five minutes before the end of the first half. Former Arsenal player Willian Gallas failed to clear the ball out of the Hotpurs area, to find Van Persie there to slot the ball in.

Tom Huddlestone put Tottenham back in the match just two minutes before the first half ended.

Szczensy brought down Lennon inside the area to have the referee point to the penalty spot. Van der Vaart converted the penalty to make the final score 3-3.

In the other match Chelsea defeated Birmingham City 3-1.

With this victory, Chelsea move up to second place, six points behind leader Manchester United.

Three minutes into the match, Chelsea were already one goal up. Florent Malouda beat goalkeeper Ben Foster after being setup by Drogba.

On the 26th  minute Chelsea doubled the score. After dribbling past the Birmingham defence, Kalou unleashed a powerful shot that would leave no chance for the Birmingham goalkeeper.

Malouda scored his second of the evening after he headed the ball in on the 62nd  minute to make the score 3-0.

Birmingham were awarded a penalty. David Luiz brought down Matt Derbyshire inside to the area. Larson converted the penalty to give Birmingham a consolation goal.

After the match Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti said: "To win the title we'll need less points than last season. We won it with 86 last season. Now, with 80 points, United can win the title. They need ten points.''

He added: "In football, I learned that everything can happen in the game right up to the final whistle. You can win the title in the last minute and you can lose the title in the last minute.

"If we thought that one month ago we'd have a little chance to come back to fight for the title, I think that everyone could have said we were crazy.

"Now we are happy tonight because we've reached second place. We await to see what happens in the next five games.''
