Joe Mifsud’s swan song as his 18 year rule came to an abrupt end

As the AGM was drawing to a close at 4.30 pm after eight hours of disusssions, outgoing MFA President Mifsud made his farewell speech as MFA President after 17 years in the helm, saying that he cannot turn against the MFA after having “sweat out blood” for it.

“This is the MFA’s internal democracy. And we must bow to the MFA’s democracy,” a rather forlorn Mifsud told assembled delegates.

“Suddenly, I feel as if a great burden has now left me,” he added.

“I have been involved in the MFA for the past 28 years since 1982 when I was elected Vice-President and 1992 when I was elected President,” Mifsud explained.

“I leave a very solid association behind me. The MFA, one of the smallest associations, has made significant progress over the years,” he insisted.

“I augur that the MFA will make programs.  I cannot turn against this association, as I have sweat out blood for it,” Mifsud added.

I am sorry if I have made offended some people and I apologise for that. But that’s the internal democracy within the MFA, Mifsud concluded his speech with the applause of most of the delegates present.

It was at this point that Mifsud and Darmanin-Demajo shook hands to the applause of those present.

On his part, the newly-elected MFA President, in a conciliatory speech thanked Mifsud for the 18 years of service that he gave to the MFA. “”We would like to see Mifsud continue serving in the UEFA committee as he has done till no that he gave to the MFA,” Darmanin-Demajo added.

“Now we have to turn to hard work so that out programme is implemented for the benefit of clubs,” he concluded as the MFA’s annual general meeting drew to a close.
