“Injured” Red Devil Michael Carrick is confronted by Fabio Capello

Like a schoolkid who got caught playing truant, Michael Carrick got rumbled at the Community Shield.

The Manchester United central midfielder was left out of Fabio Capello’s England squad for Wednesday’s upcoming friendly with Hungary (match preview here) after Carrick was reported as carrying a knock by the Red Devils. Just last week Sir Alex Ferguson had said that Carrick would be out for two weeks with an ankle injury.

Yet, that was proved 100% false at Wembley on Sunday as Carrick lined-up for United against Chelsea, and Don Fabio came to realise that he’d been taken for a ride.

As Carrick walked up the Wembley stairs to get his medal he was confronted by the England manager who was clearly caught on camera saying “I thought you were injured!” Capello then made a telephone gesture as if to say “it would have been nice if you’d called.”

Afterwards Sir Alex came out to try and defuse the situation, saying “I can only apologise. I was certain he was out for two weeks then he came and said he was fit.”
