24-year old Marsa striker dies
Unexpected death shocks local football.
A 24-year old foreign striker who played with Marsa FC passed away during the night.
Nigerian Basil Chibuzor Chibueze was taken ill during a training session yesterday evening. He was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital but died shortly afterwards.
Chibueze made several appearances for second division side Marsa FC and had already signed for another year with the same side. During the 2013-14 season he netted 10 goals from 24 appearances, finishing the season as Marsa's top scorer.
His goals were crucial for Marsa to avoid relegation to the third division.
In the past he also played for Gozitan teams Zebbug Rovers and Xewkija Tigers, and Santa Lucija among others.
The news broke out after Marsa FC issued an official statement on their facebook page.
“We regret to inform you that Basil Chibueze has passed away. Our condolences go to all of his family. Rest in peace our friend,” the statement reads.
Apart from football, Chibueze also worked as a bus driver.
His brother, Ikechukwu also played as a footballer with local sides before passing away suddenly at the age of 23 in 2007.
