Wigan stun Spurs, top three all win

Rooney netted from the spot in the first half after Jonathan Spector's poorly timed tackle on Ryan Giggs in the box. While Nani was nowhere to be seen for the spot-kick, the Portuguese winger cut inside brilliantly to smash United's second, before Dimitar Berbatov's agile finish from his cross sealed the points.

Earlier, Wigan gained revenge for their 9-1 defeat at White Hart Lane last season as they secured a 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs produced a lacklustre display just days after reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League and paid the price as Hugo Rodallega fired home from inside the box with ten minutes remaining. Spurs threatened to score an equaliser late on but Wigan held on for their first points of the season.

Chelsea made it three wins from as many games with a 2-0 victory over Stoke City. They did not repeat the free-scoring ways of their first two games but were good enough to shrug off a Frank Lampard penalty miss to claim the points.

Lampard saw his weak effort saved by Thomas Sorensen after Ryan Shawcross had brought down Florent Malouda. Chelsea cleared their heads and captain John Terry created the opener for Malouda. The defender broke up play before surging forward and clipping the ball into Malouda who swept home.

Although Glenn Whelan struck the underside of the bar, Stoke were unable to fashion an equaliser and the wind was knocked from their sails when Nicolas Anelka won a penalty, which Didier Drogba converted with aplomb.

Arsenal, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten run to three games with a 2-1 win at Blackburn Rovers.

The Gunners were expecting a physical battle and had to withstand some early pressure, with Chris Samba heading over and Cesc Fabregas nodding the ball off the line.

Arsenal rode their luck early on, before striking in stunning style. Robin van Persie set Theo Walcott away with a glorious pass and the forward's hot streak continued as he lashed an unerring finish into the bottom corner.

Rovers hit back before the interval, with Mame Diouf rolling home from close range after El Hadji Diouf had shrugged off the attentions of Laurent Koscielny. But Arsenal are made of sterner stuff these days and, despite seeing Van Persie limp off, they claimed the points when Andrei Arshavin hammered home after Fabregas' shot ricocheted into his path off Walcott.

Blackpool fans' first taste of Premier League football at Bloomfield Road was a real treat as they held Fulham to a 2-2 draw.

In a game with four disallowed goals, Bobby Zamora climbed high to head home in front of the watching Fabio Capello. The Tangerines refused to lie down and John Pantsil turned a shot from Luke Varney into his own net to level the scores.

The home fans were out of their seats on 77 minutes when Varney exchanged passes with Brett Ormerod before slotting the ball home. But Blackpool's hopes of victory were dashed three minutes from time when Dickson Etuhu clipped a shot over the onrushing Matthew Gilks to earn a point for Fulham.

Andy Carroll grabbed his fourth goal of the season to earn Newcastle a 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake slotted Wolves ahead when ghosting in between defenders on 43 minutes, but Carroll showed strength and determination in equal measures to head in Joey Barton's cross just after the hour mark.
