City held, Liverpool beat West Brom
Manchester City went down 1-0 to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light thanks to a 90th minute penalty from Darren Bent.
Bent scored his fourth goal of the season from the penalty spot four minutes into stoppage time after being brought down by Micah Richards. But City should really have been ahead when Carlos Tevez skied over an open goal after being played in by Yaya Toure with just 16 minutes gone.
Striker Fernando Torres came to Liverpool's rescue with his first Premier League goal since March to beat 10-man West Brom 1-0 at Anfield.
Torres volleyed home Dirk Kuyt's cross from the edge of the penalty area to end 65 minutes of frustration for the hosts. It was his first goal for club or country in 11 matches and notched up Roy Hodgson's maiden league victory as Liverpool manager as James Morrison was sent off late on.
Kevin Davies and Robbie Blake struck from set-pieces as 10-man Bolton came from two down to claim a 2-2 draw in a fiery contest with Birmingham.
Blues defender Roger Johnson began an eventful afternoon at the Reebok Stadium with an early opener before getting involved in an incident that saw Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen sent off. Johnson had challenged Jaaskelainen for the ball just before half-time and the Finn appeared to slap him in the face as they regained their feet.
Craig Gardner doubled Birmingham's lead but Bolton responded to the challenge to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign. Davies replied with a penalty after a foul by the ubiquitous Johnson and veteran Blake levelled with a stunning late free-kick.
Luke Young scored his first goal for nearly two years to give Aston Villa a 1-0 win in the clash with Everton.
The former England defender, who rejected a move to Liverpool earlier in the month, broke the deadlock after nine minutes with a powerful shot. But Everton dominated possession for long periods and Steven Pienaar struck the bar in the first half.
