Barcelona cruise as Mourinho's Real Madrid draw
David Villa marked his league debut for Barcelona with a goal as Pep Guardiola's side began the defence of their Primera Division title with a comfortable 3-0 win at Racing Santander on Sunday evening.
Lionel Messi opened the scoring with a fine goal after just three minutes and Andres Iniesta added an even better second later in the half as the Spanish champions quickly took control at El Sardinero.
Racing striker Mohamed Tchite saw his penalty saved by Barca keeper Victor Valdes moments later and Villa had an effort ruled out for offside before the break.
But the Spain striker struck again after 62 minutes with a pinpoint header to score his first goal in Barca colours and ensure an ideal start to the league campaign for the Catalans.
Jose Mourinho had to settle for a point in his first Primera Division game in charge of Real Madrid as they drew a blank at Real Mallorca.
The visitors were largely uninspiring yet still created enough chances to have won comfortably with Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo uncharacteristically wasteful in front of goal.
And with Mallorca goalkeeper Dudu Aouate turning in a wonderful display, there was no way through for Madrid's star-studded team.
Dani Osvaldo struck a brace and Jesus Datolo scored on his debut as Espanyol kicked off the season with a 3-1 win at home to Getafe.
Osvaldo struck either side of half-time to put the Barcelona side in control of the match and although an Ernesto Galan own-goal gave Getafe hope of salvaging a point, Datolo sealed the win for Espanyol with the clincher deep into added time.
Real Sociedad began life back in the Primera Division with a 1-0 win over Villarreal thanks to Xabi Prieto's second-half goal.
The Basque side were returning to the top flight following three years in the Second Division and fans' idol Prieto ensured the club rejoined the big time with a bang.
The skilful midfielder played a clever one-two with Joseba Llorente on the edge of the box and latched on to the striker's back-heel to slot a low shot past Villarreal keeper Diego Lopez after 57 minutes.
Deportivo La Coruna and Real Zaragoza played out a goalless draw at the Riazor.
Zaragoza's summer signing Marco Perez had the first sight of goal in the 10th minute but after breaking free of the Depor defence the teenage striker saw his well-struck shot parried by Manu Fernandez.
Another of Zaragoza's pre-season recruits, veteran goalkeeper Leo Franco, then found himself in the action as he dived to his left to push away Andres Guardado's shot from the edge of the box.
Sevilla shrugged off an early shock from new boys Levante to run out comfortable 4-1 winners in their season opener on Saturday night.
Ruben Suarez put the hosts ahead with a 10th-minute penalty, but Abdoulay Konko levelled two minutes later and Alvaro Negredo put Sevilla ahead from a dubious spot-kick.
Right-back Konko grabbed his second after 62 minutes before Renato rounded off the scoring two minutes from time.
Joaquin Sanchez netted a second-half brace as Valencia began life without star duo David Villa and David Silva with a 3-1 victory over Malaga.
Villa and Silva were both big-money departures from the cash-strapped club this summer, along with fellow World Cup winner Carlos Marchena, but Unai Emery's side still enjoyed a winning start to the new Primera Division season after seeing off Malaga.
Aritz Aduriz, signed from Real Mallorca this summer to help fill the gap left by Villa, enjoyed a dream league debut for Los Che as he opened the scoring after just 10 minutes.
Ever Banega floated in an outswinging corner from the right and Aduriz climbed highest on the edge of the six-yard box to thump an unstoppable header past Francesc Arnau.
Valencia had a great chance to double their lead in the 35th minute but Juan Manuel Mata was denied when one-on-one by Arnau, and Malaga made the most of the escape by equalising on the stroke of half-time through Sebastian Fernandez.
Eliseu Pereira's low free-kick from the left edge of the area picked out Fernandez, who got a slight touch on the ball to deflect it just inside the near post and past the despairing dive of Cesar Sanchez.
Cesar kept his side on level terms just after the restart when he produced a brilliant one-handed save to tip over Jose Salomon Rondon's far-post header.
Joaquin then took centre-stage to earn Valencia the spoils.
The 51-times capped Spain international put his side ahead in the 69th minute when he charged into the area before firing in a low cross-shot that took a deflection off Ivan Gonzalez before flying past Arnau.
The former Real Betis winger then ensured the points would be heading back to Valencia with a second goal five minutes later, smashing the ball into the far corner following good work by David Navarro and Aduriz.
A Fernando Llorente goal just after half-time was enough to give Athletic Bilbao an opening-day victory and spoil Hercules' return to the top flight in the first game of the new season.
Llorente, a World Cup winner with Spain earlier this summer, headed home from a free-kick to seal the points for Athletic in Alicante against a Hercules side who finished the match with 10 men following the dismissal of Matias Fritzler in the last minute.
Fritzler handled and was sent off for a second bookable offence.
