Chelsea maintain winning start

Premiership champions Chelsea maintained their winning start to the Barclays Premier League season.

Michael Essien headed Carlo Ancelotti's side in front from a Didier Drogba corner after just two minutes and then Matthew Upson and Robert Green combined to gift the Blues a second in the 17th minute.

England international Green spilled Drogba's 30-yard free-kick and when Upson tried to clear, the ball cannoned off Kalou and into the net over the head of the helpless Green.

Essien got his second seven minutes from time to wrap up the points. Scott Parker grabbed a consolation two minutes later with Frederic Piquionne then missing a great chance to set up a tense finale.

It was the first goal Chelsea had conceded this season but it was not enough to give the Hammers their first point of the campaign.

Arsenal eased to victory against Bolton Wanderers after a first-half scare at the Emirates Stadium.

Laurent Koscielny put the Gunners ahead, but Johan Elmander equalised for the visitors.

However, second-half goals from Marouane Chamakh, Alex Song and Carlos Vela ensured Arsenal remain second in the Barclays Premier League.

Manchester City hit back to earn a draw with Blackburn Rovers at Eastlands.

Nikola Kalinic put the visitors ahead but Patrick Vieira equalised in the second-half for City.

West Bromwich Albion secured a Barclays Premier League point at home to Tottenham Hotspur.

Chris Brunt scored the 50th league goal of his career to rescue a draw for the Baggies at The Hawthorns.

The former Sheffield Wednesday player cancelled out Luka Modric's opener four minutes before the interval.

Harry Redknapp's side dominated the first half but it was a different story in the second 45 minutes, when Albion had the better chances.

Blackpool snatched another three priceless Barclays Premier League points at Newcastle United.

Charlie Adam brought Newcastle down to earth with a bump as he converted a 45th-minute penalty after Luke Varney had been tripped by Alan Smith to claim a hard-fought victory.

Magpies defender Mike Williamson hit the post and keeper Matt Gilks pulled off fine saves to deny Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton, substitute Peter Lovenkrands and Andy Carroll as the home side launched a concerted fightback, but DJ Campbell wrapped up the win with a late second.

Ten-man Sunderland were pegged back for a point at Wigan Athletic.

The Black Cats had skipper Lee Cattermole sent off for the second time this season when he was booked twice in quick succession midway through the opening half for fouls on Mohamed Diame and Hugo Rodallega.

However the visitors took the lead on 66 minutes when record signing Asamoah Gyan side-footed Jordan Henderson's cross past Ali Al Habsi.

But the home side salvaged a point three minutes from time when Antolin Alcaraz scrambled an equaliser.

Fulham came from behind to earn a win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Craven Cottage.

Jelle Van Damme put the visitors ahead, but two Moussa Dembele goals won the match for Fulham.
