January Transfer Window Round up
Chelsea and Everton the two winners in the window as Premier League clubs struggle for a good deal on deadline day
Chelsea signed Colombia International Juan Cuadrado from Italian side Fiorentina for a fee in the region of £27million which was by far the biggest transfer in the January transfer window. Following this deal, Chelse winger Mohamed Salah moved in opposite direction moving to Fiorentina till the end of the season.
West Bromwich Albion were active movers as manager Tony Pulis added to his squad much needed experienced players in the form of Darren Fletcher signed on a free after being released by Manchester United and Graham Dorrans who was tipped to join Norwich before joining Pulis’ squad.
Crystal Palace came to the rescue of Manchester United’s nightmare signing Wilfred Zaha to secure his return to his former club. Manchester United paid £15million for Zaha exactly two years ago.
Meanwhile the Red Devils moved for unknown defender Andy Kellett who will be joining Van Gaal’s team for the remainder of the season from Bolton Wanderers.
Southampton acquired Benfica’s attacking midfielder Filip Djurici on loan with a view of a permanent move in the summer. The Saints have also signed Ryan Bertrand on a permanent basis who was initially on loan from Chelsea. Ronald Koeman earlier secured the services of fellow Dutchman Eljero Elijah.
Tottenham decided to invest for the future and forked out £5million for the services of Dele Ali from MK Dons. Mauricio Pochettino decided to let winger Aaron Lennon join Everton on loan. Meanwhile the Spurs released defender Benoit Ekotto.
Wolfsburg have announced the signing of World Cup winner Andre Schurrle from Chelsea in a fee worth to be around £24million. Schurrle had just made five starts this season and was set for further lack of playing time due to the impending arriveal of Juan Cuadrado.
English clubs spent over £80million of spending at start of play, £15million on the same point last year, when another £35million was spent on deadline day.
There were no major moves in Italy; with Juventus securing the services of Alessandro Matri on loan from AC Milan, Roma signed Ivorian hit-man Seydou Doumbia from CSKA Moscow on loan. AC Milan moved for Roma forward Mattia Destro as well as adding Alessandro Cerci, Salvatore Bocchetti, Luca Antonelli and Gabriel Paletta.
Former Italy defender Davide Santon joined Roberto Mancini’s Inter from Newcastle.
Elsewhere; former Everton man Tim Cahill has signed for Chinese side Shangai Shensua after leaving MLS outfid New York Red Bulls, while Porto defender Rolando joined Belgian Champions Anderlecht on loan for the remainder of the season.
