Atletico destroy rivals Real Madrid
Atletico Madrid crushed Real Madrid 4-0 in a win which blew the title race wide open
Tiago opened the score for Diego Simeone’s side after only 13 minutes and early substitute Saul Niguez doubled the score for Atletico just moments after going on the pitch.
Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandukic scored the other two goals in a result which left Real Madrid completely humiliated.
The win saw Atletico move to just four points behind their rivals giving Barcelona the chance to move just one point behind the leaders if they beat Athletic Bilbao on Sunday evening.
Today’s match marked the sixth meeting of the season between the two sides with Real Madrid astonishingly failing to win on any of the occasions.
Real Madrid were missing key players in the form of Pepe, Sergio Ramos, James Rodriguez and Marcelo, but coach Carlo Ancelotti was able to count on the return of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Shortly after the start of the game, JuanFran powered his way through down the line finding Mandzukic in the area with the latter sliding the ball to Tiago who drove the ball into the net.
Few minutes later and Atletico were at it again when Siqueira eased his way down the byline to chip the ball to substitute Saul who exhibited an acrobatic volley to make it 2-0 for the hosts.
Atletico continued their dominance in the second half and could have added more goals through Griezmann, who hit an over -head kick which went high, and Tiago who’s free header went straight to Casillas.
The third goal however arrived on 66 minutes. Arda Turan played the ball to Saul with the midfielder heading the ball across goal to find Griezmann who struck out a leg to put the ball in.
Towards the end, Atletico scored their fourth when substitute Fernando Torres sprinted down the right wing and crossed for Mandzukic for the Croatian to head the ball home to crown Atletico’s heaviest defeat over their rivals since 1987.
