Last-gasp Harry Kane goal salvages draw for Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspur recovers from two goals down to earn Spurs 2-2 draw against West Ham United at White Hart Lane
Tottenham Hotspur salvaged a dramatic late draw against West Ham at White Hart Lane, coming back from two goals down to draw thanks to Harry Kane’s last minute strike.
West Ham had a two-goal lead thanks to goals from Cheik Kouyate and Diafro Sakho, but Danny Rose pulled one back through a scuffed shot to set up a grandstand finish, and then Kane was awarded a controversial penalty deep in stoppage time after Alex Song was adjudged to have brought the Tottenham striker down.
Replays showed that Alex Song made minimal contract, but Kane hit the turf and referee Jonathan Moss ordered the penalty. Hammers’ custodian Adrian saved Kane’s first effort but the Tottenham striker planted home to follow-up for Spurs’ equaliser.
The home side had started the match brightly with Algerian midfielder Nabil Bentaleb recording Spurs’ first shot on target in the eight minute. But against the run of play, the impressive Cheick Kouyate headed home a pinpoint cross by Aaron Cresswell to put the Hammers in the lead.
Enner Valencia sould have doubled the visitors’ lead just before the hour when his shot was blocked by Eric Dier and Jan Vertonghen. Minutes later, the Hammers went two ahead thanks to Diafra Sakho’s first away goal since October 18. The forward started the move when his cross-shot bounced across the box before knocking it past Hugo Lloris.
Nine minutes from time, Danny Rose’s scuffed effort reduced the deficit to just one goal, while three minutes into stoppage time, the home side were awarded a controverisla penalty after Alex Song was adjudged to have obstructed Harry Kane.
The in-form striker then picked himself up but his tame penalty was saved by Adrian. Kane was however on hand to send the rebound home and to pick up a point with the game’s last kick of the ball.
The draw means that Spurs stay sixth while West Ham have now gone six away matches without a victory, remaining eighth in the table. Kane’s goal also means that the striker has scored 12 goals in his last 11 Premier League matches, increasing his goal scoring tally to 24 goals in just 36 matches in all competitions this season.
