John Terry out of England squad with back injury

Chelsea defender John Terry will not play for England against Montenegro in the Euro 2012 qualifier on Tuesday night, after he withdrew from the squad with a back injury.

Sources close to John Terry told ESPNsoccernet "It happened on Friday when he jumped to head the ball and when he came down he had a problem with his back. We thought we would be able to sort it out, but now it is serious enough for us because he would be unable to train tomorrow (Monday) as the back has stiffened."

The Football Association confirmed that the defender will miss the game, as a statement on their official website revealed: ''John Terry has returned to Chelsea this evening with a back injury. Terry was assessed by England medical staff on Sunday and will not be fit to play any part in Tuesday's game against Montenegro. No further call-ups will be made at this time.''

Terry is the third player to withdraw from Fabio Capello's squad in as many days following the previous departures of Phil Jagielka and Aaron Lennon.

He is also the most significant given the Chelsea skipper was virtually certain to face the Eastern Europeans, who have won all three matches so far and head to Wembley at the top of Group G.

Instead, Capello will rely on fit-again Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand and he must choose between Bolton's Gary Cahill - who was called up to the squad to replace Jagielka - and Manchester City's Joleon Lescott to partner him.
