Hibernians fight back to defeat Maccabi Tel Aviv
Hibernians earned an important 2-1 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round.
Maccabi were the better side at the beginning of the match, but Hibernians played better in the second half to notch the win.
Maccabi Tel Aviv took the lead on the 22nd minute. Off a cross from the right, Ben Chaim headed the ball towards Nosa Igiebor who easily beat goalkeeper Jurgen Borg from close range with his powerful shot.
Maccabi Tel Aviv continued to press for another goal during the remaining of the first half, creating numerous opportunities to score.
Maccabi Tel Aviv would be made to regret all their missed opportunities to double their lead when Hibernians managed to equalise on the 73rd minute. Off a cross by Jackson Lima, Jorge da Silva Pereira’s perfect header neat goalkeeper Juan Pablo Colinas Ferreras to make the score 1-1.
Hibernians were now full of confidence and on the 85th minute, they managed to take the lead. Off a freekick by Andrew Cohen, Jackson di Lima Siqueira headed the ball in goal past Maccabi Tel Aviv’s goalkeeper.
Hibernians now go into the second leg with a slight advantage. The match will be played next Tuesday at the Itztadion Bloomfield in Tel Aviv.
