Hernandez sends Man United through
Javier Hernandez climbed off the bench to score a brilliant goal as Manchester United claimed a 3-2 win over Wolves and a place in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.
On two occasions Wolves pegged United back, with George Elokobi and Kevin Foley cancelling out strikes from debutant Bebe and Park Ji Sung, but the visitors were undone by the brilliance of Hernandez.
Bebe, the player famously signed by Sir Alex Ferguson without the Scot having seen him play, was handed his full debut and justified his place with a goal. He looked a little ungainly at times as United disappointed in the first half, but they were far more focused after the restart and Federico Macheda went close with a curling effort and Darron Gibson drilled a free kick straight at Wayne Hennessey.
Wolves were not without their chances and Sylvain Ebanks-Blake drilled a shot at Ben Amos, but United broke in rapid fashion and Bebe's cross-shot looped up off Elokobi and over the line.
Wolves produced an impressive response and were level on the hour as Elokobi atoned for his part in United's goal by climbing high and powering a header from six yards past Amos.
Stephen Hunt and Steven Fletcher passed up presentable chances for Wolves and they were made to pay on 70 minutes as Park Ji-sung drove into the box before curling a left-foot shot beyond Hennessey.
Once again Wolves responded, as Foley stroked home following Fletcher's cheeky backheel. But Ferguson turned to Hernandez and he added another goal to his growing scrapbook when gliding through tackles and powering his shot through Hennessey.
Brentford's giantkilling run in the Carling Cup came to and end as Birmingham edged through 4-3 on penalties. Alex McLeish's men looked like slipping out of the competition as they trailed to a Sam Wood goal, but the evergreen Kevin Phillips netted in injury time and the Premier League side limped through on penalties.
Lee Bowyer missed for the home side, but Blues won through as Michael Spillane and Craig Woodman failed to convert from the spot for Brentford.
West Brom eased their way into the quarter finals with a 4-1 win at Leicester City. Simon Cox opened the scoring for the visitors with a close-range effort, but the Foxes were level on 53 minutes when Nicky Shorey turned the ball into his own net.
The match turned back in West Brom's favour on 62 minutes when Leicester keeper Conrad Logan had a moment to forget. He came out to collect a routine ball but inexplicably allowed it to slip through his grasp and Somen Tchoyi slotted into an unguarded net. That moment knocked the stuffing out of Sven Goran Eriksson's side and Steven Reid headed home on 79 minutes to seal the win before Cox added a late fourth.
Mauro Boselli and Ben Watson scored second-half goals to ensure Wigan boss Roberto Martinez secured a 2-0 win over his former club Swansea.
Roy Keane's Ipswich Town battled back from a goal down to claim a 3-1 win over Northampton Town. A dipping drive from Liam Davis handed Northampton the lead, but Carlos Edwards smashed an unerring shot into the corner to draw Ipswich level and further goals from Damien Delaney and Tamas Priskin sealed the win for the home side.
