Women’s football: Malta defeats Estonia 2-0
Malta Women's National Team earned their first win in the Aphrodite Cup 2016 thanks to a 2-0 victory over Estonia.
Captain Dorianne Theuma and Rachel Cuschieri were on the score sheet once again following their goals in the 2-3 loss against Lithuania last Friday.
With this win, Malta have now four points from three matches while Estonia are still seeking their first point following their couple of losses in their first two outings.
Malta started this match on a positive note when after 13 minutes they forged ahead through Dorianne Theuma following an assist ball from Brenda Borg. Malta continued to press but they could not double their lead with the first 45 minutes ending 0-1 for Malta.
In the second half, Malta did not slow down and they kept putting pressure on Estonia's back line until finally they were rewarded with a second goal through Rachel Cuschieri following a delightful ball onto her feet delivered by Dorianne Theuma. Coach Mark Gatt introduced several substitutes on the field without diminishing his team's rhythm as they managed to protect their lead until the final whistle to register their first win of the tournament.
Malta starting XI: Janice Xuereb; Gabriella Zahra (Kim Parnis 84), Stephania Farrugia, Dorianne Theuma (C), Ylenia Carabott (Martina Borg 45), Rachel Cuschieri (Emma Xuereb 73), Alishia Sultana (Jasmine Vella 77), Shona Zammit, Jade Flask, Charlene Zammit, Brenda Borg.
