[SLIDESHOW] Valletta supporters celebrate 23rd league title
Thousands of Valletta fans celebrate Valletta's coronation as the champions of the BOV Premier League
Thousands of enthusiastic Valletta supporters yesterday celebrated the coronation of their club as the champions of the BOV Premier League.
Valletta, who finished off their campaign with a 1-1 draw against their closest rivals Hibernians, were crowned champions at the end of the match. The title was the 23rd in the club’s history and takes them just two behind Floriana.
Yesterday’s match against Hibernians could have reached greater heights were it not for Hibernians losing to Birkirkara the previous week. The loss gave Valletta an unassailable four point lead at the top of the table. But despite the result being a dead-rubber for the Citizens, thousands of ardent Valletta supporters turned up at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali.
For many fans, celebrations started early with carcades across several localities. Most supporters wore red or white, while some even went as far as painting their face in the traditional Valletta colours. Other supporters went to the stadium waving huge flags.
The celebrations continued throughout the night as supporters gathered at Republic Street.
