It is a trophy we absolutely must win - Inter president Massimo Moratti on World Club Cup
Inter coach Rafael Benitez chances leaving Inter Milan are looking more and more realistic as time passes.
After the losing to Werder Bremen 3-0 on Tuesday night and placing second in Group A of the UEFA Champions League, President Massimo Moratti was absolutely furious.
"I don't want to create problems before the Club World Cup and we'll see what is to be done after that tournament," Moratti told Sky Sport Italia. "I had a feeling we'd lose against Werder, but I certainly didn't expect it to be this bad.
"I feel betrayed, as I always do when we lose a game in such an obvious way. I took it very badly, but I don't think the players did it on purpose. Perhaps they felt the tension of their next appointment [the Club World Cup] a bit too much.
"There are no alibis for this tournament. It is a trophy we absolutely must win. Benitez has to show character, otherwise he won't win the Club World Cup. That's not an ultimatum - I'm just saying it is very important.
"I think the players could do with some psychological support at this moment and Benitez has to find a way to fix this season."
"Benitez has to get hold of the team and make sure everything is running like clockwork - something this side has already shown it's capable of."
Reports from Italy suggest even if Benitez wins the World Club Cup, Moratti could still look for a replacement. The top choices are Fabio Capello, Pep Guardiola and Luciano Spalletti. The more realistic candidates are former Milan coach Leonardo, ex-Inter midfielder Diego Simeone and former Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga.
Leonardo is the only candidate that does not have a contract with another team. This gives Moratti the option to hire a quick replacement without any problems.
