Sports lawyer Angelo Chetcuti has been elected as the new secretary-general of the Malta Football Association.
He replaces Bjorn Vassallo, who has occupied the top position since 2014 but who resigned last month to take up the position of director of European member associations at FIFA.
Chetcuti is vice-president of Birzebbugia FC, who he represents on the MFA’s council, and had earlier this year launched an unsuccessful bid for the MFA’s vice-presidency. He will officially start his new job as the MFA’s secretary-general on 1 December.
Chetcuti in July sounded a positive tone when asked by MaltaToday whether the Maltese football team could ever emulate the success of Iceland – who made it all the way to the quarter-finals in this summer’s European Championships. Indeed, he cited author Malcom Gladwell’s popular theory that it takes roughly 10,000 hours of practice to achieve expertise in any field.
