Despite being faced with a tricky test, Balzan registered a 2-0 win against Floriana to regain top spot.
Balzan went ahead on the 11th minute. From a free kick, Ryan Fenech sent a dangerous cross inside the penalty area that found Elkin Serrano Valero who headed past Matthew Grech.
Oliver Spiteri’s side kept on insisting and hand another opportunity on the 17th minute. Matteo Piciollo fired a shot from the edge of the penalty area that was saved by Grech.
Floriana hit back two minutes later. Mario Fantanella hit a close range shot that forced a good save from Ivan Janjusevic.
Fontanella went close again to score the equalising goal for his side on the 30th minute. Ignacio Varela served Fontanella inside the penalty area and the latter saw his shot ending up slightly off target.
However, Balzan increased their advantage on the 33rd minute. Paul Fenech passed the ball towards Anderson De Barros who hit a low shot that ended up inside the net.
Supporters of both sides had to wait a lot as the next chance on goal was created by Floriana on the 76th minute. Fontanella delivered a cross towards Nicolas Chiesa whose effort ended up wide.
Balzan had the last opportunity of the match five minutes later. Bojan Kaljevic fired a powerful drive that was parried by Grech.
