UEFA Champions League | Barcelona 0 – Juventus 0
Despite having numerous chances, Barcelona could not do anything against a well organised Juventus defence as they had to settle for a 0-0 draw that was enough for the Italians who go through to the semi-finals with a 3-0 aggregate score.
Knowing that they need to work hard if they are to produce a comeback, Barcelona took hold of possession immediately and tried to create chances on goal. On the other hand, Juventus remained tight and applied a counter attack strategy.
The Italian champions created the first chance of the match on the 13th minute. Gonzalo Hinguain hit a powerful drive from the edge of the penalty area that went high.
Barcelona responded two minutes later. Neymar served Ivan Rakitic and the latter saw his finish going high.
Luis Enrique’s side went close again on the 17th minute. Lionel Messi sent a fine through ball towards Jordi Alba who failed to make contact with the ball.
On the 19th minute, Luis Suarez delivered the ball inside the penalty area towards Messi whose low shot went off target.
Messi tried his luck again on the half hour mark. The Argentine went on a good run before firing a shot from the edge of the penalty area that was well saved by Gianluigi Buffon.
The Bianconeri nearly went ahead on the 49th minute. Juan Cuadrado received the ball on the right, ran towards the penalty area, and hit a shot that ended up slightly wide.
Two minutes later, Neymar and Messi exchanged possession and the latter saw his effort going over.
Messi kept looking lively and tested the Juventus defence once more on the 55th minute. The twenty-nine year old fired a strong shot that took a deflection and went out for a corner.
Max Allegri’s side replied on the 62nd minute. Miralem Pjanic won possession inside Barcelona’s half and hit a volley that was tipped behind by Ter Stegen.
On the 66th minute, Barcelona lost another great opportunity. Following a corner, Buffon failed to neutralise and the ball fell for Messi whose effort went high.
The Catalans created their last chance on the 69th minute. Messi sent a back pass towards Sergi Roberto and the Spanish player fired a left footed volley that went past the far post.
In the remaining minutes, Barcelona kept on controlling possession, but never really tested Buffon who was well guarded by a masterclass defence.
