Tarxien held by Qormi as Sliema leave it late to win

Tarxien Rainbows were held by Qormi in a  match that ended 1-1. The result dented Tarxien’s chances of catching up to run away leaders Valletta.

Tarxien are nine points behind Valletta in the BOV Premier League standings.

Qormi took the shock lead on the 16th  minute when Abubakar Bello-Osagie beat Tarxien goalkeeper David Cassar.

In the second half, Tarxien managed to get the equaliser thanks to an own goal from Kang Hojung on the 56th  minute.

In the other match Sliema left it late to score twice in added time to defeat ten-man Vittoriosa stars. This is the first victory for Sliema in their last eight matches.

Sliema pressed in the opening minutes of the match and came close to taking the lead on a number of occasions.

Sliema scored the first goal of the match on the 18th minute when Jean Pierre Mifsud’s assist helped set up Jackson Lima Sequeira who shot low past goalkeeper Simon Agius.

Sliema were on full attack and exactly one minute later they doubled the score thanks to a shot from the right by Chakib Lachkhem.

30 minutes into the match Vittoriosa managed to get the equaliser thanks to a penalty. Edison Luis Dos Santos was brought down in the area by Clayton Failla. Dos Santos made no mistake in scoring from the penalty spot.

Dos Santos made it 2-2 when his direct freekick beat Sliema goalkeeper Viktor Szentpeteri in the final seconds of the first half.

Vittoriosa took the lead for the first time in the match on the 76th  minute. Anthony Ewurum beat the Sliema goalkeeper after a fine build up from teammates Leighton Grech and Jorge Santos Silva.

Vittoriosa were reduced to ten men on the 76th  minute after Edison Luis Dos Santos received a second yellow card.

Sliema scored the important equaliser three minutes in added time of the second half. Off a cross from Josef Mifsud, Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza’s header beat the goalkeeper.

Sliema then scored the dramatic match winner one minute later. Mifsud Triganza’s perfect pass found teammate Chakib Lachkhem who shot low to beat the Vittoriosa goalkeeper Simon Agius.

This victory will surely inject some confidence in the Sliema team who were thirsty for a victory.
