Confederations Cup | Cameroon 1 – Australia 1
In the first ever match between these two sides, Cameroon and Australia shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
Australia started on the front foot and created the first chance of the match after three minutes. Robbie Kruse fired a shot from the edge of the penalty area that was neutralised by Fabrice Ondoa.
Cameroon responded on the 7th minute. Benjamin Moukandjo served Vincent Aboubakar inside the penalty area and the latter hit a low shot that went slightly wide.
The Australians threatened again on the 21st minute. From a free-kick, Tommy Rogic saw his shot going over.
On the 32nd minute, Alex Gersbach of Australia went on the left flank and sent a cross that reached Mathew Leckie who fired over the bar.
The African champions had a good chance on the 38th minute. Aboubakar and Moukandjo exchanged possession and the latter thrashed a first time finish that was saved by Maty Ryan.
In the additional time given by the referee prior to half time, Cameroon went ahead. Andre-Frank Zambo Aguissa managed to beat Milos Degenek on the end of a through ball and chipped the ball inside the net to score his first international goal.
Australia started the second half looking for an equaliser and were close on the 47th minute. Mathew Leckie found Tomi Juric inside the penalty area and the Australian striker lifted the ball over.
Cameroon missed a golden chance to increase the margin of the score on the 57th minute. Christian Bassagog went past Bailey Wright before passing towards Aboubakar, but the Besiktas player finished wide from an ideal position.
Cameroon paid harshly for missing this opportunity as Australia levelled the score three minutes later. Gersbasch was brought down by Ernest Mabouka inside the penalty area. After consulting with the video assistant, the referee pointed towards the spot. From the resulting kick, Mark Milligan made no mistake and converted behind Ondoa.
On the 63rd minute, Cameroon had a promising chance to regain the lead. Mabouka’s cross was met by Aboubakar who fired over.
Hugo Broos’s side had another great opportunity on the 76th minute. Sebastien Siani curled in a fine cross in the middle of the penalty area towards Aboubakar whose header went marginally over.
Aboubakar lost another chance for his side on the 84th minute. Bassogog went running down the right side before delivering the ball in the direction of his team mate who attempted a scissor-kick, but his effort sailed wide.
