Chile started on the attack and had a good chance after four minutes. Lars Stindl lost possession and Chile went forward through Charles Aranguiz.  The latter served Arturo Vidal who forced a good save from Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

On the 12th minute, Chile threatened again. Eduardo Vargas hit a low shot from the edge of the penalty area that was neutralised by Ter Stegen.

The Chileans forced another good save from Ter Stegen on the 19th minute. Vidal’s shot from outside the penalty area was parried by the Barcelona goalkeeper.

A minute later, the Germans went ahead. Diaz lost possession just outside his penalty area and Timo Werner went through on goal. The RB Leipzig player squared the ball for Stindl who had the easiest of jobs as he tapped the ball inside the net.

The Germans had another great opportunity on the 37th minute. Sebastian Rudy sent an excellent pass in the direction of Leon Goretzka whose strike went centimetres wide.

Two minutes later, the world champions had another great opportunity. Werner delivered the ball towards Julian Draxler and the German captain saw his shot ending up just wide of the post.

On the 44th minute, Chile made another defensive mistake that nearly gifted Germany the second goal. Gonzalo Jara lost the ball and allowed Goretzka to test Claudio Bravo from close range. However, the goalkeeper managed to block his effort.

The first chance of the second half was created by Germany on the 55th minute. Jean Beausejour lost possession over the left wing, allowing the Germans to counter attack quickly. Draxler ran inside the penalty area and sent a shot that was deflected by Jara for a corner.

Referee Milorad Mazic took what can be considered as a controversial decision on the 65th minute. Jara was observed elbowing Werner and the referee decided to consult with the video assistant referees. After watching the video himself, he decided to show a yellow card towards the Chilean player despite replays showing that Jara clearly aimed his elbow into Werner’s face.

Chile increased pressure in their attempts to equalise and had another opportunity on the 64th minute. Vargas received the ball inside the penalty area and hit a shot that was well saved by Ter Stegen.

The German goalkeeper was on the alert once more a minute later. A deflected Beausejour’s cross wasn’t completely cleared and the ball fell for Vidal. The Bayern Munich star unleashed a powerful drive that was deflected for a corner.

Ter Stegen made another save on the 80th minute. Aranguiz went inside the penalty area before hitting a shot that seemed to be heading out. However, the goalkeeper didn’t want to take any chances and tipped the ball behind for a corner.

Two minutes later, it was substitute Leonardo Valencia who sent a long range shot that was blocked by Ter Stegen in what can be considered as an unconvincing save.

Chile’s best chance came on the 84th minute. Sanchez’s cross was deflected to the near post. Edson Puch ran to take the ball from Ter Stegen and played the ball back for Angelo Sagal. However, the substitute finished high with just the goalkeeper to beat.

Four minutes into the additional time, Chile won a free kick which Sanchez took charge of. The Arsenal man managed to hit the target but Ter Stegen was on the alert and parried his effort.
