Ten-man Milan defeat Catania as Lazio add more misery to Fiorentina
Milan are not showing signs of slowing down on their march to dethrone Inter of the Scudetto.
Milan defeated Catania 2-0 in a match that should have been a tricky encounter for the Milan giants.
Milan and Catania had numerous chances and both teams could have easily scored in the first half.
Milan’s Mark van Bommel still has a lot to learn in Serie A. In his Serie A debut match with Milan, he was sent off in the second half after receiving his second yellow.
This did not slow Milan down. Milan seemed to attack more after Bommel was sent off.
Four minutes after the sending off of Mark van Bommel, Robinho scored to put Milan in the lead.
Ibrahimovic’s powerful free-kick rebounded off the Catania goalkeeper into the feet of Robinho who made no mistake to conclude.
Catania pushed for the equaliser, with the risk of leaving gaps on their end of the pitch.
With five minutes to go in the match, Ibrahimovic received a cross from Robinho. Ibrahimovic then shot home from close range to beat goalkeeper Mariano Andujar to secure all three points for Milan.
Milan’s Robinho, Cassano and Ibrahimovic are becoming one of Italy’s and Europe’s most powerful striking force.
With this victory Milan keep a comfortable lead at the top of the Serie A table.
In the earlier match, Lazio defeated Fiorentina 2-0.
Lazio had to wait till the 69th minute to take the lead.
Fiorentina’s Per Kroldrup fouled Libor Kozak inside the area to have the referee point to the penalty spot.
Libor Kozak converted the penalty to give Lazio a 1-0 lead.
Four minutes later, Kozak scored his second goal of the match to add more misery on Fioretina.
Kozak moved into the area unmarked to head the ball in off Giuseppe Sculli’s cross.
Lazio went on to win 2-0.
With this defeat, Fiorentina are moving down the table at a fast rate. This surely is not a good sign for coach Mihajlovic who must now be feeling the pressure.
