The Wanderers had an excellent chance to forge ahead after just eight minutes. One of Tarxien’s defenders was judged by the referee to have handled the ball inside the penalty area and thus a penalty kick was signalled. However, Frank Temile saw his shot from the eleven metres mark being saved by Andrea Cassar.

Sliema opened the score through another penalty on the 32nd minute. Cassar brought down Jefferson de Assis and the referee pointed towards the spot. This time, it was de Assis who took charge of the spot kick and made no mistake.

Tarxien suffered a huge set back on the 45th minute as they were reduced to ten men. Michele Paolucci was shown a straight red card following a foul on Kurt Shaw.

The Rainbows equalised on the 62nd minute. Alexander Jens Wemmer fired a shot that took a deflection off a defender and ended up inside the net.

John Buttigieg’s side regained the lead on the 78th minute. Nii Nortey Ashong delivered a cross in the direction of Michele Sansone whose first time shot gave Cassar no chance.

Sliema sealed the issue with another goal two minutes later. de Assis served substitute Younes Marzouk and the latter placed the ball past Cassar.
