Orcas Bac sets new national record
Last Sunday at the Marsa Racetrack we had a spectacular racing programme which, as predicted, reached its peak during the Autumn Championship Final for Premier category horses sponsored by Cassar Petroleum Services Limited.
Even though the number of horses registered for this championship was much less than in the past years, the quality of the horses was very high and with the timings registered during the semi finals we were predicting that the final was going to be a race remembered for a very long time. All those present at the track were surely not disappointed because the race was everything one had expected and more with the winner Orcas Bac registering 1'13"4/km over 2140m thus setting a new national record over this distance. The previous record of 1'13"7 had been registered by In Vitro du Bourg three times with the last time being on 24th December 2007.
Orcas Bac is a 9-year old Swedish gelding who made his debut in Malta on 5th April of this year. His owner is Angelo Cassar and his regular driver is Charles Camilleri but during this championship he was driven by young Rodney Gatt. Driven also by Gatt, Orcas Bac had won the Sette Giugno Cup which means he has won the three races driven by him. This was the 9th race for Orcas Bac in Malta and his fourth victory.
Finishing in second place was Ohime Mag driven by one of his owners Ronald Cassar, third was favourite Okilaibo driven by Julian Farrugia and fourth Vanmaker Limburgia driven by Charles Camilleri.
Presentation of trophies to the winners was done by the C.E.O. of Cassar Petroleum Services Limited, Mr Darren Marmara.
The other ten races on the programme were all qualification races for the Condition Races sponsored by the same Cassar Petroleum Services Limited. With the timings registered today it seems that these Condition races will also be of a very high level. More qualification races will be raced next Sunday.
