Karting Champion Adrian Cauchi (Virtu Ferries) racing at Triscina

This weekend, the 2011 Malta Karting Champion Adrian Cauchi is taking part in the seventh round of the Regional Karting Championship of Sicily at Triscina, Castelvetrano near Trapani, thanks to the support received from Virtu Ferries and other sponsors.

The winding Triscina circuit is 1,280 metres long, and there is no comparison between it and the temporary karting circuit at Hal Far that is used by the Island Karting Club, and which has just been closed down by the authorities. This year Adrian won his 4th karting national championship at Hal Far.

Adrian has never raced at Triscina before, so his task is more difficult during the early stages of the competition, particularly the qualifying laps and the pre-final. Hopefully, by the time he reaches the final stage of this championship round he would have learned all the braking points and the apexes of all the right- and left-hand bends and corners, including the hairpin.

Last year Adrian finished 3rd overall and 4th  in class at the Sole Luna, Vittoria, and Pista del Sole, Melilli, respectively, and this year he hopes to finish even better, even though he will be experimenting with a new chassis.

Last year’s champion Francesco Tomarchio has moved to a different category, but this year Adrian will have to contend with strong Italian drivers Salvatore Battaglia and Davide Vincenzo Scuto. The Italian drivers will have an advantage because they are familiar with the Triscina circuit.

Salvatore registered a fastest lap of 50.547 seconds on 26th June at Triscina in the pre-final race of 16 laps of the fifth round of the championship. He then went on to win the final race of 20 laps.

This year Trevor Muscat has placed an excellent 3rd behind Davide and Salvatore  at the Sole Luna circuit on 10th  July, registering an even better lap than the fastest lap he recorded a year ago. He will definitely be challenging Adrian for a podium finish, if he will be taking part in Triscina.

A contingent of 15 supporters – including 14 year-old promising karting driver Jamie Mangion - is crossing over to Sicily from Malta to support Adrian, and his race engineer Aldo Vella as well as Adrian’s new team director Vincenzo Toscano. Although Jamie is too young to participate in the championship races, he is hoping to have the opportunity to practice with Adrian’s other racing kart on Thursday and Friday at Triscina.

Adrian’s new team with the new brand of kart is being launched in Sicily. After his return to Malta, the media will be invited to the unveiling of the new team at a press conference at the Radisson Blu Resort in St. Julian’s. Adrian’s new kart will display the logos of both Virtu Ferries and the Radisson Blu Resort St. Julian’s during the race in Sicily.

In this way, Adrian is trying to promote Malta-based companies to the audience in Sicily through the sport. Last year, he and Trevor proudly displayed the Maltese flag on the podium in Vittoria. He is hoping to do the same at Triscina on Sunday.  The motor sport enthusiasts wish Adrian the best of luck and success so that he may bring home more success and trophies to the ones obtained by Maltese drivers last Sunday.
