Maltese drivers for final round at Racalmuto

Three Maltese drivers will be participating in the sixth and final round of the Campionato Siciliano di Velocita in Pista, which takes place at the Autodromo Valle dei Templi, Racalmuto, this weekend.

They leave Malta this Friday on the Virtu Ferry to Pozzallo.

All three drivers have performed well on a regular basis at Racalmuto in recent years, but this year sees yet another milestone for the Malta boys, for with just this one round of the championship still to run, two of these drivers are in with a very good chance of winning their respective classes in the prestigious Sicilian championship.

Johann Spiteri returns to Racalmuto knowing that the 1000cc class for Formula cars, in which he will be competing, is among the most competitive in the championship. Despite this he has been outstanding this season, winning twice and finishing 2nd on a further two occasions. Johann races a Jedi car powered by a Suzuki engine.

Alan Curmi was class champion at Racalmuto last season driving his Radical PR6 Suzuki, and is in line to repeat that success this season in the 1600 Formula class, following a good number of class wins. He is also well placed in the local ICC championship, so has been very busy this season trying to cope with preparing 2 cars, one for each championship.

The third Maltese runner at Racalmuto this weekend will be Joshua Anastasi, again driving his JBR-4 Kawasaki SC. This is also Joshua's third season of circuit racing. He won his class in 2009, had a lousy season of retirements last season, but is now in line again to win his class for the second time. Joshua also leads the "Pole position" championship, having put his car on pole position on both his visits to Racalmuto this season.

A number of competitors from mainland Italy are expect at Racalmuto this weekend as the AICS championship grows in stature with every event, but the Malta drivers will be taking this in their stride, optimistic about returning with more silverware, and a couple more championship wins for Malta.
