ASM members approve track relocation and new name ASMK

Following a series of members meetings including an Extra-ordinary General Meeting on Friday 25th February, ASM members approved the Re-Location of the Race Tracks and also a change to the Association’s name and Logo respectively.

The ASM President’s and Secretary’s speeches clearly reported the last six years of negotiations with success with the Government and other authorities concerned for the re-location of the tracks to a nearby land at Ta Qali.

ASM president also drew the attention to all present in the EGM that though the contract contents  for the re-location was read to all ASM members in various meetings, it was read again and shown on screen in the Maltese language for all present. Thanks to all present it was clearly demonstrated that all appreciated the advantages of this re-location as 99% voted in favour of the signing on of this contract.  As a result of ASM signing this contract in the coming days, ASM is guaranteed to continue to organise Motorsport events at the present location until the new premises are complete.

The members present also voted for the association’s change of name to ‘Assocjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi’ (ASMK). ASM President also explained to all present that the association has to also show respect to the cars clubs within and represent them both in the Association’s name and also in a New Logo. This is mainly based on the same one which is being replaced but one can note the inclusion of the letter K to read ‘ASMK’ and the word Karozzi around the Logo. This change won 77% votes in favour as the new Logo reflects the sport for cars and motorcycles. These two votes reflect the good management of the association’s officers.

The 7th Event for the Autocross cars was held last Sunday 27th January. The tracks were wet in the morning but the winter blue skies and bright sun turned the tracks surface into excellent conditions. Vince Farrugia on a VW Polo was very happy for winning the prestigious Class A race Finals ahead of Joseph Grech on a Fiesta, Ivan Birmingham on a Suzuki Swift and Patrick Cassar on an Opel Corsa. He kept his pace very well ahead of Christian Galea on his Fiat Ritmo who many a time was closely followed by Matthew Borg on an Opel Nova. They battled close for the lead and demonstrated excellence in off-road high velocity driving. Young Ryan Scerri followed in 4th place.

Dominic Zammit on an Alfa Sud dominated the three Heats of the Gozo Autocross section until a steering failure right in front of the Grand Stand forced him out of the race. Silvan Caruana on a Ford Escort took the lead and Marvic Vassallo on another Escort took 2nd place on the 7 laps race.

Motocross Rider Carmelo Borg on a Kawasaki 250cc won the 3 Heats of the Motocross Class A. All Class A riders drove fast on the damp track surface but Carmel demonstrated clean jumps throughout the 17 minutes long race. After 3 heats, Carmel is placed 1st overall on the day. Clayton Camilleri on a KTM and Stefan Dimech on a Honda CR followed in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
