Grimaldi Team Malta to take part in Cesaro hill climb this weekend
For the third year in succession Grimaldi Team Malta will be fielding a group of five young Maltese drivers this weekend at the famous hill climb at Cesaro. The event is once again being organised by Sicilian race promoter Nando Salerno in conjunction with the Mayor of Cesaro, who every year puts more effort into the success of this now famous event on the Italian hill climb calender.
The first edition of this 3km hill climb at the gateway to the beautiful Nebrodi Natural Park was held in 2008. It was the first event in which six Grimaldi Team Malta drivers participated with remarkable success.
Young Zach Zammit won overall driving his Ralt Honda 2000, establishing a hill record in the process which has yet to be broken. Joshua Anastasi finished second with his JBR-3 Kawasaki 1400 in a year which was also to crown him ICC champion, whilst likeable Italian champion Carmelo Scaramozzino finished third driving his Breda BMW 3000, and Matthew Zammit placed fourth driving his Van Diemen Suzuki 1200.
Five Maltese competitors made the trip to the Nebrodi again in August 2009 and the result was no less impressive with Alan Curmi this time winning overall in the same JBR-3 Kawasaki and Joshua Anastasi finishing second overall driving his new JBR-4 Kawasaki.
True to form, Nikolai Degiorgio had the spectators on their feet as he bombed impressively up the hill with his Lancia Delta Integrale to the delight of the thousands present, and on his way to another spectacular class win. This year it's five cars again, but young champion and Cesaro record holder Zach Zammit will unfortunately not be present with his Ralt Honda 2000 since the car will not be ready in time.
Zach is the only person ever to drive the Cesaro hill in under 2 minutes. Last year's overall winner Alan Curmi, this time driving his new Radical PR6 Suzuki will however be present, hoping to repeat his winning performance, whilst local hill climb and Sicilian circuit champion Joshua Anastasi who placed second overall on both occasions will be doing his best to make it to the top step of the podium on his third event with his improved JBR-4 Kawasaki.
Young Alfasud driver Mark Micallef will be making his first hill climb appearance in Sicily at Cesaro this weekend, and father and son Alex and Matthew Zammit will also be present, Alex driving his new Radical Kawasaki and Matthew his Van Diemen Suzuki. The team will again be managed by Joe Anastasi.
With the Cesaro hill climb gaining in popularity a number of high profile Italian competitors are expected among the entrants which should number well over 100, including works cars from Elia Avrio and Autosport Sorrento, a couple of Tatuus Honda Formula Masters, and local boy Jo Spoto driving his new Speads Suzuki.
Plenty of supporters making the trip across from Malta to cheer them on, and if the athmosphere among the Maltese team is anything to go by those spectators certainly aren't going to be disappointed
