Vettel stays fastest on Friday afternoon
Red Bull shows their dominance in the second practice session of the day.
It was Red Bull team mates Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber who slogged it out for fastest time as the second free practice session got underway at the Hungaroring on Friday afternoon, but as the 90 minutes progressed Ferrari got into the act too, with Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa posting fast times.
In the end Vettel aced everyone with 1m 20.087s, which was 0.497s faster than Alonso’s best of 1m 20.584s which just beat Webber’s 1m 20.597s. Massa was fourth with 1m 20.986s.
Behind them the ongoing surprise of the session was Vitaly Petrov’s 1m 21.195s for Renault, which left him ahead of Lewis Hamilton who was much happier with the balance of his McLaren and took it round in 1m 21.308s to Robert Kubica’s 1m 21.375s in the second Renault.
Nico Hulkenberg was Williams’ faster runner with 1m 21.623s, then came Jenson Button on 1m 21.730s in the second McLaren, Michael Schumacher in the lead Mercedes on 1m 21.773s, Pedro de la Rosa’s BMW Sauber on 1m 21.809s and Rubens Barrichello in the second Williams on 1m 21.844s.
Nico Rosberg had a troubled day as he did not break 1m 22.039s in the second Mercedes, while Kamui Kobayashi got the prize for the most off-track moments of the day in his BMW Sauber on his way to 1m 22.212s. Jaime Alguersuari ran 1m 22.469s to lead Toro Rosso, ahead of Adrian Sutil who was still sorting out the Force India with its blown diffuser as he posted 1m 22.507s, and Sebastien Buemi who lapped the second Toro Rosso in 1m 22.602s.
Force India’s Vitantonio Liuzzi got going in his VJM03, which does not have the new diffuser, and set a best of 1m 23.138s which left him only 18th, ahead of Jarno Trulli on 1m 24.553s for Lotus, Timo Glock in the lead Virgin on 1m 25.376s, team mate Lucas di Grassi on 1m 25.669s, and the well matched HRTs of Bruno Senna and Sakon Yamamoto on 1m 26.745s and 1m 26.798s respectively.
Heikki Kovalainen did 1m 27.795s, but was then struck down by mechanical gremlins on his Lotus.
