Rome dealing with resident ‘problems’

Italian capital city Rome continues to aim for a place on the Formula 1 calendar by as early as 2012 and no later than 2013 although its Mayor admits that facing opposition from residents is a current issue.

With F1 commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone having first suggested the idea of a street race in the ancient city, gossip has varied surrounding Rome’s chances although Mayor Gianni Alemanno remains optimistic.

“From 2012, or at least no later than 2013, a Formula 1 Grand Prix will be staged in Rome,” he said on Italian television. “It will be Italy’s second race, too, because the Monza event is already guaranteed.”

However, although track architect Hermann Tilke has selected the EUR district of the city due to its wider roads than the rest of Rome, Alemanno admits that complexities with local citizens are currently being dealt with.

“There are problems because we must reach a full agreement with those who live in EUR,” he acknowledged. “We have an agreement at an international level but there are no certainties; that said, our promise remains a solid one.”
