Fernando Alonso takes pole in Monza
Fernando Alonso sent the home fans into raptures by putting his Ferrari on pole position for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
The Spaniard produced a spectacular lap of one minute 21.962 seconds early in the final qualifying session, a lap that was never beaten.
Jenson Button, running an unusual high-downforce aerodynamic setup, starts alongside Alonso forMcLaren, while the second Ferrari of Felipe Massa was third.
Lewis Hamilton dominated in practice, but had to settle for fifth, splitting the two Red Bulls of Mark Webber and Sebastian Wettel.
