Dermot Galea places second in UK triathlon
Taking part in a competitive triathlon following a long period away from the sport, Birkirkara St. Joseph’s Dermot Galea, currently undergoing a university course in the UK, turned on a stunning performance in a race from the Full Boar Triathlon Series.
He finished second, with split times reminiscent of his golden hay days.
The race was held in Market Bosworth Lake in Leicestershire UK. Also taking part in this race was Barry Farrugia, another Birkirkara St. Joseph triathlete. The race started with a 1,500 metre swim in windy conditions.
The former Malta champion, showing flashes of his glorious past, took the lead from the very start, opening a gap of one and a half minutes at the end of his 21 minutes 47 seconds swim.
Following a typical fast transition, Galea was out on the 42-kilometre bike segment of the race, aware of a couple of very strong cyclists in his wake. Half way through the cycle he was caught by Hywel Davis, and although Galea tried to hold on to his lead, the Britain was too strong for him. Finishing the cycle in one hour, six minutes, 49 seconds, Galea set out chasing the race leader in the ensuing 10-kilometre run.
However Davis kept his momentum and further increased his lead during this segment of the race. Galea finished the run in 35 minutes, 42 seconds and the triathlon in two hours, five minutes 14 seconds in second place. Barry Farrugia finished the race in two hours, 33 minutes, 31 seconds in 29th place.
