Bike Ride being organised in memory of Clifford James Micallef

Cliff Micallef, 45 of Swieqi, was an experienced cyclist who was responsible for tackling mechanical problems encountered by the LifeCycle team.Tragically on the 30th July 2009, Cliff, a father of three, died on the spot when he was hit by a car on the coast road.

He had been training for the LifeCycle Challenge ‘Istanbul to Damascus’ to raise funds for the Renal Unit at Mater Dei Hospital.

The cycling fraternity along with Cliff’s wife Shirley, his three Children and all his family, friends and the Life Cycle Team will be coming together in his memory on Sunday, 24th July 2011. A bike ride is being organised in memory of Clifford James Micallef on the secondanniversary of his demise (1964-2009) by the Kunsill Malti għall-iSport (KMS) in collaboration with the Malta Cycling Federation (MCF).

Cliff’s memorial bike ride will start at 9.00a.m.and will start from and finish at the Sliema Ferries(Car Park).  The route will take riders along the Gzira seafront, towards Msidathrough Ta’ Xbiex. From Msida head towards Valley Road, B’Kara, Naxxar Road, roundabout Bathroom Design, B’Kara Bypass, University roundabout (Skate Park),  Msida, Rue D’Argens (near Msida Police Station) turning towards Paul & Rocco Petrol Station to reach the Gzira seafrontand return to Sliema Ferries.

Pick up points will also be set up along the way for younger and less experienced riders and these include: 9.15a.m.Msida (Police Station area), 9.30a.m.Bathroom Design,9.45a.m. University roundabout and 10.00a.m. Gzira Stadium.The bike ride should finish around 10.15am.

Full safety measures will be taken during this bike ride.  All cyclists are required to wear a helmet and stay with the group; apart from a lead car there are also back up teams, traffic police and an ambulance on standby following the group. The general public are also invited to participate; those interested in participating are to get their own bike and helmet.

Water will also be distributed free of charge.
