Mixed results for Marsa C.C

The Marsa team batted first and put up a moderate score of 109 runs. Andy lenard being the main contributor with fifty three runs which included seven fours. Andy Naudi also chipped in with thirty runs. For SGS Procter was the main wicket taker with two.

D Wright opened the batting and remained unbeaten with fifty five runs in his teams run chase. He had help from four other batsmen but none could stick around when they were set. Wickets fell at the wrong time for them. They ended making 103 runs and lost the game. Tony Slater and Joy Ghoseroy were the main wicket takers, snaring two wickets each, both were aided by the wicket keeping of Sam Aquilina who took three stumpings.

On Saturday a game was played against another returning team , Leyland C.C who are on their sixth tour. The Marsa team batted first and were rolled over for 59 runs. John Grima was the only batsmen to make it into double figures and remained unbeaten on twenty seven runs. For Leyland, Watkinson was the main wicket taker with four. Four other bowlers took a wicket each. One must also mention the great throw from the square leg boundary from Lewis which had Bikram Arora run out with a direct hit.

Arora was looking to get his own back and had taken the only three wickets which Leyland lost. Lewis this time with his batting guided his team to victory with nineteen runs. Asfar and Parkinson both chipped in with ten runs a piece. Leyland win the game.

On Sunday the second game against SGS was played. SGS batted first and were bowled out for 95 runs with fine bowling from Tony Slater who took three wickets and Bikram Arora who took two. For SGS Wright top scored with twenty three runs, Marshall, seventeen runs and Schofield thirteen runs. In reply Marsa were in trouble losing four wickets for thirty five runs. This brought together Bikram Arora and Andy Naudi and all looked nice and easy for the home side.

Gaskin takes the vital wicket of Arora (twenty four runs) and Marshall takes three more wickets which brought the last batsmen in and the score at 93. Naudi scored two runs to bring the game to a tie but could not get the single of the last ball of the over. Tony Slater now had to face the opening bowler, being cool as ever Slater gets an inside edge to backward square leg and the batsmen scamper through for the winning runs. Marsa win series two to nil. For SGS Proctor and Hall also took two wickets each.

This coming Wednesday Marsa play their second game against Leyland. On Saturday the men’s Summer league commences and on Sunday the Women’s Summer league comes to an end.
