Volleyball - Valletta and Paola Hibs Candy both win
In the Men's First Division match Valletta defeated Aloysians while in the Ladies First Division fixture, Paola Hibs Candy were victorious over Fleur de Lys in last weekends volleyball matches.
Men's First Division
Valletta vs Aloysians 3-0
Valletta the reigning champions were defeated by Aloysians Defenders in a three set thriller. Aloysians were showing signs of improvement from last year and with the win aginst Valletta in the pre season cup their confidence had increased. They also had the help of Cypriot Stavros Paraskevopolous as setter and also had Lithuanian central player Kestutis Saulis debuting with them.
Aloysians started with a good lead however during the first set the experienced Valetta squad put them under pressure with good attacks by Cedric Bondin. Valletta took the lead and were close to winning the first set until two consecutive points by Aloysians ended the set in their favour.
The second set was not as balanced as the first with Valletta gaining their points mostly through Robert Balzan. Aloysians showed strong blocks from Kestutis Saulis and Ron Stivala and were also helped in defence by Gordon Cachia who played as libero.
In the third set Aloysians had no difficulties in wrapping up the set and game against a demoralised Valletta.
Ladies First Division
Paola Hibs Candy vs Fleur de Lys 3-0
Paola Hibs Candy won against Fleur de Lys with the final score ending in the Paolites way 3-0. Fleur de Lys started off badly immediately conceding the first 8 points of the set. However they recovered half way through but the Paolites pushed harder with Alison Borg and Gertrude Zarb and won easily 25-15. The second set was a more balanced affair. Fleur de Lys welcomed back to their squad Catherine Attard who missed the past two seasons.
Sara El Gazi and Thais Gatt both gave their utmost for Fleur de Lys and, these were close to snatching a winner. However, Paola showed good team work and won the second set 25-22. The third set started with both teams eager to prove their better gameplay. Fleur de Lys wanted to win one set whilst Paola needed to wrap the game up. At the end of it all, the last set went Paola's way consolidating their leadership at the top of the table.
