Volleyball: Valletta defeat Attard

Valletta San Antonio were back on track in the second round of the Men's 1st Division League, as they beat Attard with a 3-0 (31-29, 25-12, 25-23) score.

Attard seemed to be the stronger outfit in the opening stages of the game, getting most of their points through their prolific Polish spiker Stelmuszcyk as they maintained their lead through the two technical time-outs. But Valletta settled into their game and with Vince Pace and Goffredo Guazzoni giving stability and continuity in the Reds' reception and defence, they turned the tables on their opponents to take the first set 31-29.

The second set saw the complete domination of Valletta as player coach Jonathan Chetcuti made some technical changes in block, neutralising many of Attard's attacks, particularly those coming from Stelmuszcyk, with Caruana and Balzan picking up most of the points in block .Valletta stretched their lead to 16-9 and never looked back, with some good combinations in the middle by Spiteri with attackers Caruana and Chetcuti. Veteran Cedric Bondin came in towards the end of the set and with his four consecutive services closed it with a convincing 25-12 score in Valletta's favour.

Valletta started off the third set with Bondin taking Brunetti's place as they sought to maintain the pressure on their opponents while Attard went all out to win a set back. Valletta were always in control and at one point had a 5 point advantage but some errors in service and wasted chances in attack saw Attard coming back to within a point. Valletta managed to bring the 3 points home by winning the third set 25-23.
