Talk on sexuality and adolescence for Special Olympics members

Leading family therapist Dr Charlie Azzopardi recently gave a talk on the topic of ‘sexuality and adolescence’ to members of Special Olympics Malta (SO Malta).

The talk focused on family perspectives and was delivered to a well-attended audience of family members, special educators, coaches, educational psychologists and volunteer clinical directors.

Family members expressed their concerns on the importance of continuous sex education during and beyond formal schooling.

They also stressed the importance of developing a supported independent living programme which could serve as a structured framework for persons with intellectual disabilities to lead an independent life in an inclusive environment.

The talk was part of a series organised by Special Olympics Malta in collaboration with the Healthy Athletes Programme and the Family Support Network within this non-profit voluntary organisation. Special Olympics Malta, supported by the Vodafone Malta Foundation, provides sports and non-sports opportunities to around 200 athletes and their families.  The organization has four voluntary clinical directors and a number of coaches supporting eight different Special Olympics disciplines.

Martin Gregory from the Vodafone Malta Foundation expressed his satisfaction at the well-attended talks being organized by SO Malta.  "The success of these initiatives show that SO Malta is on the ball when it comes to the familiar and development needs of its members.

We have been supporting SO Malta for a long time now and we keep encouraging the team to work hard at giving such a precious service that has such a high demand."

Currently SO Malta is recruiting clinical volunteers and helpers to support the upcoming Healthy Athletes event in September at the Cottonera Sports Complex.
