Young weightlifters impress

On the 13 May, the Malta Weightlifting Association organised the Malta Open Championships.

The 'Under 11 Years' Category was dominated by Rylee Borg and Blake Vassallo, it must be noted that in this category athletes are not assessed on the amount of weight lifted but rather on the quality of their technique.

The 'Under 14' category was won by Emmersin Bugeja with 129 points followed by Malcolm Camilleri with 107 points and Kirstin Coleiro with 106 points.

Nicole Gatt won the Youths female category with 134 points, Marilyn Grech won the Seniors with 100 points whilst the overall female was won by Vicki Kerr with 183 points.

The Male Youths Category was won by Thomas Farrugia with 183 points and followed by Hayden Farrugia with 170 points. Joran Farrugia placed third with 149 points, he also managed to break 3 National records in the over 94Kg category.

The Juniors was dominated by Rodmar Pulis who not only won the category with 274 points but also managed to break 4 Natioanl records when he lifted 120Kgs, than he topped that lift with 123Kg. Unfortunately he failed his third attempt with 125Kg. His other two records were on the 215Kg Total and then managing to top that with 218Kg for his 4th record.

The Seniors' category was won by Noel Coleiro with 274 points followed by Matthew Muscat Inglott with 263 points and Clint Grech with 253 points.

There was extreme competition for the title of Overall Male Lifter. Coleiro managed to clinch this prestigious title with just 0.3 of a point over Pulis.

The Competition was run by Mr.Alfred Ellul Mercer, assisted by Technical Officials, Simon Brincat, Gordon Cachia, Ramona Borg, Andrea Caruana, David Saliba, Stephen Borg and Gayle Caruana. This Competition was made possible by the assistance of the 'Kunsill Malti ghall-isport'.
