Table football: Derek Conti Winner of International Open

This weekend Malta Table Football Sports Association organised its 1st International Tournament for this season which was held at the Ghaqda Melita Band Club at Msida.

Three categories were organised in which on Saturday the Veterans & Under 19 were played whilst the Open category was played on Sunday. A total of 31 players participated in these events spread in all categories,

On Saturday the Veterans category was won by Massimo Cremona after beating Charles Aquilina in the final 3-2 after extra time. This was the first show for both finalists in this category. In the semi-finals Cremona won 2-1 against Adrian Bonnici whilst Aquilina won 2-0 against Jason Pisani. In the Under 19 category Angelo Borg who occupies the top spot in the World rankings won the final against Darren Carabott 2-1.

On Sunday the Open tournament was won by Valletta Subbuteo Club player Derek Conti who had the better of Mark Gauci 4-3 in a thrilling final. Conti won the semi-final against Massimo Cremona 2-0 whilst Mark Gauci won also 3-0 against Hansel Mallia.

At the closing of the tournament the presentation was held with Malta Table Football Sports Association President Joe Zammit Pavia presenting the trophies to the winners and finalists in all categories.

The local competitions will now start on 10th February where the 1st Tournament will be played with a further 3 tournaments being played in the months of March, April and May. The winners in all categories will entitle the players to play in the next World Cup being scheduled for July 2013.
