Puttinu Cares charity kayak expedition covers 25 more nautical miles

It took the ‘From Tunisia to Malta in aid of Puttinu Cares’ Kayak expedition 25 hours 20 minutes to paddle from the Tunisian sea-side resort of Mahdia to Lampedusa 75 nautical mile apart.

On the second phase the kayakers paddled the 25 nautical miles separating the Italian Islands of Lampedusa and Linosa in approximately 7hours - in fact they left Lampedusa at 6.30 in the morning in quite choppy sea which however got calmer the further they went and made landfall at 2.30 in the afternoon. Salvo Messina suffered sea sickness again and had to retire but this time Francesco Landolini decided to keep the flag flying by paddling the Italian kayak on his own.

Besides the Italian team of Francesco Landolini and Salvo Messina the other two teams on the event are the Maltese couple Albert Gambina and Dorian Vassallo and the Tunisian duet Zakaria Mahmoudi and Mohamed Ali El Ghek.

So with the total distance paddled so far standing at 100 nautical miles the kayaker now face the final hurdle – Linosa–Malta – the concluding 75 nautical miles run home .
A crossing expected to take over twenty-four hours of non-stop paddling. In fact the planned departure from Linosa is Wednesday morning at 8.30 with the projected arrival in Golden Bay Malta on Thursday morning around 9.30/10.00.

The three kayaks are doing this open sea long distance marathons under the watchful eye of a local support flotilla of four yachts.

The Tunisia-Malta “Kayak for Cancer” event is being held under the Distinguished Patronage of His Excellency Dr George Abela, President of Malta.
