Gay triumphs in Diamond League showdown with Bolt

Tyson Gay got the better of Usain Bolt in the 100 metres showdown at the Diamond League meet in Stockholm.

Gay's triumph - the first time he has emerged victorious over Bolt - was achieved in a time of 9.84 seconds, with the Jamaican second after clocking 9.97.

After the race, Bolt cited the Achilles injury he suffered earlier in the season as part of the reason why he produced an underwhelming performance.

"Today was just one of those days for me," Bolt said. "I need to work on my strength as my first ten metres is crap, pretty much. It showed there, I had a good start but there was no power, no nothing. I tried to work on it, but it didn't work, I guess.

"I was ready, I was focused, but [Gay] was more prepared than me and in better shape than me."

For the second week in succession, Michael Rimmer was left disappointed after being narrowly pipped to glory in the 800m by European champion Marcin Lewandowski, who triumphed in 1:45.06.

"I am a bit [sick of the sight of Lewandowski], yeah. It was one hell of a rough race, I got pushed off the track twice," second-placed Rimmer told BBC Sport. "I'm almost satisfied [with European silver], but having watched it back I could have done much more."

In the women's 1500m, Stephanie Twell finished ninth and Hannah England 14th behind winner Nancy Jebet Langat.
