Valletta Subbuteo Club win the Malta International Open 2014
The Malta International Open, organized under the auspicious of the World Federation, the FISTF, was held this weekend at the 12th May band club in Zebbug
Saturday was reserved for the Team competition, and the local reigning Champions, the Valletta Subbuteo Club came out winners, by winning against all their opposition. In the most awaited match, between the two Valletta clubs, the VSC beat the Lions 2-1, and continued to beat Bormla SC and Lions B both 4-0, and thus winning this
International Open. This was their 8th International success, as in their 25 year history, Valletta Subbuteo Club won 5 Grand Prix and 3 Int. Open, apart from being Maltese Champions for 9 times.
Sunday was the day for the individual categories, and even on this day, the VSC left their mark, when 5 of their players made it to the podium.
In the Open category, 3 out of the 4 semi-finalists were from the VSC, and two of them Samuel Bartolo and Derek Conti made it to the final, with the latter winning 2-1.
The Veterans category, was won by the Lion's best player Charlie Aquilina, who had to sweat to beat VSC veteran Jason Pisani. It was a hard fought match, which ended with a drawn result even after the added time. During the "shots", Aquilina was the better and won his category.
In the Under 19 category, another VSC player, current Malta U19 champion Andrew Abela, finished runner up, when he lost the final match against the Italian Federico Frollo from the Reggio Calabria club, 2-4.
Meanwhile, the Valletta Subbuteo Club, will this coming weekend be participating in the Grand Prix of France, in Paris where they aim to repeat their 2012 success, when they finished winners. A good result in this Grand Prix will also consolidate the club in the World Rankings, where the VSC are currently in the 3rd position worldwide.
