Surfski: Camilleri makes it two in a row

In a race where participants were competing against weather conditions, as well as each other, Chris Camilleri managed to power to his second victory after fighting off Luka Knezevic a week earlier.

The second leg of the ‘King of the Bay' series, held over a twelve kilometre course, was gruelling from the get-go.

Young Michael Aquilina took an early lead after the participants ran to their kayaks and took to the water, as Peter Borg Costanzi and Chris Camilleri both ran into some difficulties early on. However he was pegged back at the reef-marker, and Camilleri claimed the lead. The pack started to thin out gradually after the first turn, as all competitors were hindered by a strong cross-wind that made for tough progress.

With about a third of the race still to go, Mark Darmanin and Gerald Degaetano's craft capsized. Showing sportsmanship, Michael Aquilina gave assistance. Chris Camilleri, completely unaware of what's happening behind him, extended his lead even further. Aquilina still managed to claim 2nd place with a 1:23 timing to Camilleri's 1:08. Peter Borg Costanzi claimed third place with, clocking 1:32.

The third leg of the series will be held at 9 am on Sunday 9th March in Mellieha Bay , with Chris Camilleri looking to extend his lead even further, in his bid to win the series outright.
