Bernard storms to 100m free gold

France's Alain Bernard made amends for a disappointing relay swim to take gold in the 100m freestyle at the European Championships in Budapest.

Olympic champion Bernard, who was forced to settle for silver at the World Championships a year ago, romped home in 48.49 seconds - just 0.03 ahead of Russia's Evgeny Lagunov.

The Frenchman is the European record holder but settling for second place last year behind Brazil's Cesar Cielo did not sit well with Bernard - but he returned to the top of the podium in Hungary but the narrowest of margins.

"I'm very, very happy with that because there has been a lot of pressure on me over the last few days," said Bernard.

"We didn't do so well in the 4x100m relay and so I had to put that right today. It was an important win and I'm happy."
